Dolphin & Whale watching

Whale Watching:

Kalpitiya boasts some of the best whale watching in the world. A quick 20+ minute boat ride can get you sighting of Sperm Whales(common), Blue Whales, Blyth Whales, Killer Whales (rare), Minke Whale, Melon-headed Whales and Dwarf Sperm Whales. Sightings of up to 50 Sperm Whales at once are frequent during peak periods of movement!!

Although you can find Whales off shore most of the year the ideal season to go Whale watching is from November to April, although the major Whale shifts happen during November/December and then again in March/April. Getting out early in the morning is ideal, as you want get out before the Ocean gets choppy.

Dolphin Watching:

Kalpitiya is one of the best spots in the world to see massive pods of Dolphins, sometimes more than 1000 in one sighting. The ideal season for spotting Dolphins is from November to April – while the seas are calm.

You can find mainly Spinner, Rissos and Indo-pacific Dolphins during the peak periods in a quick 15 minute boat ride from Kalpitiya. The trip will take approximately 2-3 hours and it’s best to get there just at sunrise. During the season you are guaranteed to see Dolphins.
